Rummy Hand Ranking — Card Values & Points
Understanding card values and hand priorities is essential for minimising your score if you lose a round. This guide covers the complete points system used in Indian Rummy across all platforms including Rummy Go.
Card Points Table
| Card | Points | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Ace (A) | 10 | Can be high (after K) or low (before 2) |
| King (K) | 10 | Highest non-Ace face card |
| Queen (Q) | 10 | Face card |
| Jack (J) | 10 | Face card |
| 10, 9, 8... | 10, 9, 8... | Face value = points |
| 2 | 2 | Lowest value number card |
| Printed Joker | 0 | Always 0 points |
| Wild Joker | 0 | 0 when used as joker |
Hand Priority (What to Build First)
- Pure Sequence — mandatory, build this FIRST
- Second Sequence (pure or impure) — mandatory for valid declaration
- Remaining Sets/Sequences — complete your hand
Strategic Implications
Since face cards carry 10 points each, holding ungrouped face cards is expensive if you lose. A hand with K♥ Q♠ J♦ A♣ ungrouped means 40 penalty points from just 4 cards. This is why experienced players discard high cards early when they do not fit into sequences. Conversely, middle cards (4, 5, 6, 7, 8) are more versatile — 6♥ can pair with 5♥-7♥ or 4♥-5♥ or 7♥-8♥, giving three possible sequence combinations instead of just one or two for extreme cards.
